The Miracle of Splitting of the Moon

Known as

'Mu’jiza Shaqq al Qamar'

Allah Almighty mentions this Miracle of the Prophet in the Holy Quran as follows:

وَانشَقَّ الْقَمَرُ﴾*﴿ وَإِن يَرَوْا آيَةً يُعْرِضُوا وَيَقُولُوا سِحْرٌ مُّسْتَمِرٌّ

“And the moon has split . And if they see a miracle, they turn away and say, "Passing magic."”

{Surah 54:1-2}

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Masud narrated that: “The Moon was split into Two parts during the Lifetime of the Prophet. One part was behind the mountain and the other above it.” The Prophet said: “O Allah! Bear Witness to this!”

Imam Bukhari narrates it in ‘Sahih Bukhari, Kitab al Tafsir (H#4584)’ and Imam Muslim in ‘Sahih Muslim, Kitab Sifat al Qiyamah (6724)’ with slight variation in wordings through numerous Sahaba.

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik narrated that: “The people of Makkah demanded to be shown a Miracle and the Prophet showed them the Splitting of the Moon twice!” Imam Muslim narrates it in ‘Sahih Muslim, Kitab Sifat al Qiyamah (H#672).

Sayyiduna Jubayr bin Mutyim narrated that: During the Lifetime of the Prophet, the Moon split into Two parts. One part was on one side of the Mountain and another part was on the opposite side of the Mountain. The Infidels said: “Muhammad has done Magic upon us.” Some began to say, “If he has done Magic upon us, then he cannot do the same with everybody.”

Imam Tirmizi narrates this Hadith in ‘Jami Tirmizi, Kitab Tafsir al Quran (H#3289).

This Miracle of the Prophet is known as ‘Mu’jiza Shaqq al Qamar’ in Arabic.

This Miracle of the Prophet conveys us some unique points, they are:

i. The showing of a Miracle by the Beloved RasulAllah immediately, as demanded by the Infidels, pinpointing his immense authority and power as bestowed upon him by Allah Almighty.

ii. We also come to know that it is the characteristic habit of Infidels that they deny the Prophetic Miracles and his great status as a Prophet on some pretext or the other, in this case, first demanding a Miracle then saying that it is an act of Magic. Allah Almighty amply refutes them in the Holy Quran by revealing an Ayah.

iii. The Love and Obedience of the Moon can be judged from its Splitting into Two parts on the simple Command of the Beloved RasulAllah!
