A Simple Way to Understand the Word 'Salat' in the Holy Quran

12/12/2012 20:40

In Urdu language, the word ‘Salat’ when referring to the Beloved Rasul Allah is translated as ‘Durud’ and ‘Salat’ when referring to an act of worship is translated as ‘Namaz'. That is, ‘Salat wa Salam’ will mean ‘Durud wa Salam’!

Mufti Ahmad Yaar Khan Nayimi Ashrafi explains two basic principles while dealing with the word ‘Salat’ in the Holy Quran. He writes: “When the word ‘Salat’ is followed by the word ‘Alaa’ then it means ‘Blessings’ or ‘Supplication for Blessings’! And when the word ‘Alaa’ does not come after the word ‘Salat’ then it means ‘Prayer’ ! {Ilm al Quran; page: 144}
